Click the links on the right to see several letters written by some
very cool authors. Right now we've got about 30 letters in the collection
and the tentative plan is for the final book to have about one hundred.
Each fleshes out the details of the universe and provides story-hooks
for players. Each one has a title, a physical description the letter
or where it was hidden and a few symbols.
These symbols reveal the type of conflict the temple elders believe
is most likely to occur on this world, judging from the letter’s
content. These are also intended to help you, as a player, choose which
letter you’d like to play through in your game. Each symbol represents
different types of conflicts:
Heart: Love, passion, and jealousy.
Pen: Curiosity, knowledge, secrets and discovery.
Sword: Violence, war, and weaponry.
Knot: Family, marriage, and ancestry.
Flag: Property, nations and borders.
Lotus: The gods, their followers and faith.
Tree: Nature, animals and resources.
So let's say you have a Heart + Sword conflict. Some typical examples
would include the Trojan War, Romeo & Juliet, and the love triangle
between Cyclops, Wolverine and Jean Grey. A Lotus + Tree + Blood conflict
might be analogous to the diamond wars of Africa or the dynastic oil
conflicts in the middle-east.
Movie references include:
Princess Mononoke = Tree + Sword
Gladiator = Knot + Heart + Sword
Pi = Pen + Lotus
A Beautiful Mind = Pen + Knot +Flag
These symbols are also useful as a sort of rating system so players
can get a quick sense of the letter's content and whether they would
like to deal with those sorts of issues in that session.
I'm still accepting submissions for new letters. Feel free to post
and discuss them on the
forum and your letter might make it into the book!
